Dear _______,

Have you noticed that Birmingham feels a little more like home lately? If not, try looking up. Our Vulcan is back, and he looks prouder than ever to be here.

After leaving his pedestal empty for three years, the completely restored Iron Man has now reclaimed his position atop Red Mountain. But for most of us, the 100-year-old statue never left the spot he holds in our hearts, as the site of treasured memories and the beloved symbol of our city.

If you think about it, Vulcan is a lot like Birmingham itself. Lots of people thought his finest days were over years ago, that he might never again look like the powerful god of the forge he once did. But look at him now, shiny and strong and with a spear raised to conquer the future — much like Birmingham’s fresh resolve and newfound spirit of growth, diversity and strength.

It is this fiery, dedicated spirit of the city and the people of Birmingham that Vulcan and the new Vulcan Park will showcase to our community and its visitors. When the work is finished, not only will Vulcan Park house a restored Vulcan, but also a new Vulcan Education Center with world-class educational programs and exhibits, outdoor interpretive sites, and more than 3,500 feet of new trails. The new park will serve as a gateway to our region’s cultural, historic, and educational attractions, and as a state-of-the-art tourist and community destination.

But _____, we need your help to bring back the magic. By contributing to the Vulcan Park Foundation’s Capital Campaign, you’ll contribute to the future of Birmingham. We hope you’ll help us create a unique spot that will be the site of at least 100 more years of learning, sharing and memory making. Please return the enclosed pledge card with your gift, and become part of the lasting legacy of Vulcan and of the Magic City. The big guy is back. And with your help, we can make his place magical.

See you at the new Vulcan Park,

Katherine Billmeier
